There is nothing worse than turning on your car’s air conditioning only to be greeted by a disgusting, musty smell. If you have a BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, or Volkswagen, you are not alone. This situation is more common than you may think, especially with our damp Vancouver climate. These smells often develop without any maintenance. Let’s take a look at the causes of that nasty smell coming from your European car’s AC system and how to get rid of it properly for good.
Common Bad AC Smells in European Cars
Mold and Mildew in the Evaporator Core
The evaporator core is the part of the HVAC system that provides the cold air. When moisture collects in the evaporator core and is not properly drained, dried or removed, that moisture can breed mold and mildew in this part of the system.
The Cabin Air Filter
The cabin air filter keeps dust, pollen and contaminants outside of the car. Over time, if you drive in very urban areas, that cabin air filter becomes clogged with debris, allowing foul odors, as well as obstructing airflow through the cabin.
Clogged or Blocked AC Drain Tube
If the AC drain tube becomes clogged, moisture can build up where it stagnates into standing water in the HVAC box. That stagnate water produces musty smells and also creates an environment for bacteria and allergens.
Cheap Aftermarket AC Products
Using cheap, aftermarket disinfectant sprays or cheap cabin air filters is firm fuel to the fire. Only ever use OE (original equipment) or an OEM approved part or product when servicing your European automobile.
How to Fix it Right
1. Disinfect the HVAC System
A professional AC system disinfectant (not just a deodorizer) is sprayed directly into the evaporator through the intake or cabin vents. This disinfects the mold, mildew, and bacteria at the source.
2. Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Always install the cabin filter with a quality OE (original equipment) or OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part. For best results change the filter every second oil service.
3. Clear the AC Drain Tube
Make sure the AC drain is clear and allows dampness and moisture to drain properly. A technician can safely notify and clear blockages from the HVAC box.
4. Use the AC system all year
Run your AC regularly, even in winter. Running the AC, even for short periods helps reduce moisture and fungal growth. The drying effects of the AC compressor can hinder bacterial growth.
Preventing Future Smells
- Park in dry and ventilated locations when possible
- Avoid always using ” recirculate”
- Service the AC system annually, particularly in damp climate areas like Vancouver
